People in the GSPM community are always active on the political scene. Check out some highlights of the media coverage of GSPMers from the past couple weeks:
On his blog, brand journalist and media strategist David E. Henderson recounts a visit he made to a GSPM class in February: http://www.davidhenderson.com/2010/02/18/how-to-learn-social-media-first-steps/

(This article originally appeared in The Hatchet)
Mark Penn, an influential politico who has been dubbed the "king of polling," announced his plans to gift a portion of his personal collection of polls to establish the Society of Presidential Pollsters within GW's Graduate School of Political Management.
Today the GSPM and GWU released the results from the latest GWU Battleground Poll. And more that half the respondents (56%) said they think the country is on the wrong track.
Sixty-eight percent said that they disapprove of Congress's job performance.
President Obama has a 50% job approval rating (and a 67% personal approval rating).
Read about the poll.
View the the results. Watch GSPM Dean Arterton provide the inside scoop on the Battleground poll.

This week PR News inducted its 2009 PR Hall of Fame recipients. The honorees included Larry Parnell, who directs the GSPM's Strategic Public Relations Master's Degree program.
"We have gone from typewriters to distributing news via PDAs, from press conferences to Webcasts and tweets, from one-to-many communications to one-to-one," said Parnell. "All that has really changed is the pace and means of distributing your message. What hasn't changed is the importance of developing a strategic message, identifying your key audiences and getting your position across to protect or enhance your client/organization's reputation."

Last week, our Association for Social Media in Higher Education hosted its inaugural event, Trust and Authenticity in Social Media: The Case of the U.S. Military (check out the video). Instead of writing a “normal” recap of the event, I decided to do something different. I spent the entire event live-tweeting under my Twitter handle @JulieG, so I thought it would be interesting to look back on the event through the frame of Twitter, following the tweets — and retweets (with a few grammatical and syntactical changes, and a few explanatory notes).

We dig through Google alerts on hundreds of GSPM staff, faculty, alumni, and council members -- so you don't have to. President Obama "needs to deliver more for Main Street than Wall Street," says Celinda Lake in an MSNBC article titled "Why Women Are Losing Faith in Obama." Lake is the President of Democratic polling firm Lake Research Partners and a member of the GSPM's Council on American Politics.
"California Democrats need to ponder very seriously the prospect of putting up a candidate for governor who comes with reams of radio-show rantings like Brown," he states, sagely adding that "Republicans will put tens of millions of dollars behind making him look like a conspiracy-spouting fringe lunatic to the average voter." said Garry South in the Smirking Chimp article "Jerry Brown: a man for all rages." South is a Democratic political consultant and a member of the GSPM's Council on American Politics.
I've been working closely with several other departments within GW, including GW Today, the Elliott School, and current GSPMer Chris Brooks to launch the inaugural event of the Association of Social Media and Higher Education.
Our first event will look at trust, authenticity, social media -- and the U.S. Military. It will feature current GSPM student and former Naval officer Nicole Schwegman, along with other GW students, faculty, and alumni.
What did GSPM faculty, alumni, and Council on American Politics members tell the press during this week's news cycle?
GSPM Faculty
"A president who thumbs his nose at the other party on such a hugely important issue as healthcare reform, ignores the cost estimates by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), blames massive public opposition to his proposal on special interests, the gullibility of the American people, Republican scare tactics, Fox News, talk radio, etc., makes it clear why he is tanking in the polls," said Cheri Jacobus. - in her The Hill op/ed on Obama titled "Start Over, Mr. President."
"I think the time has come for the Democrats to say alright, we're going to have to take on one of our own here," said Democratic strategist Bob Beckel. "They are going to have to contribute because it is true that runaway lawsuits have caused insurance premiums to go up." in a Fox News piece about health care reform.

The GSPM has 3 staffers who have submitted panels to the 2010 SXSW Interactive Festival. Now we need GSPM students' help (AND all your friends' help, AND your spouse's help, AND your family's help, AND your roomate's help, AND the help of anyone else you can think of). Voting ends tomorrow so please take a couple minutes out of your day to vote for our panels. It is really quick and easy I swear.
Here's how you do it:
- 45 seconds - Go to the SXSW Interactive panel picker and create an account at http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/users/register
- 3 seconds - Vote for my panel by giving it a thumbs up at http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/ideas/index/interactive/q:Kyle+McLellan (you can also just search for my panel by searching for my name, Kyle McLellan).
- 5 seconds - Vote for Julie's 2 panels by giving them a thumbs up at http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/ideas/index/interactive/q:Julie+Germany (you can also just search for Julie's panels by searching for her name, Julie Germany).
- 3 seconds - Vote for Lynn's panel by giving it a thumbs up at http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/ideas/index/interactive/q:Lynn+Stinson (you can also just search for Lynn's panel by searching for her name, Lynn Stinson).
I have seen the awe-inspiring ability of GSPMers to mobilize before and am sure that between now and tomorrow evening I will see it again. Thank you in advance.
