The Graduate School of Political Management, in an effort to support youth activism in community service and politics, awards $10,000 prizes annually to undergraduate students who display unique talent and dedication to political service.
1. Outstanding Achievement in Undergraduate Student Government Campaigning
$10,000 to be awarded for the Graduate School of Political Management to a candidate, or a campaign manager, who ran an innovative campaign for student government.
The winner will be selected by a group of three judges (a student, a faculty member, and a professional in politics), based on how well the applicant answers all of the following questions:
- What position did you run for/ manage a campaign for? When was the election held?
- How did you run your student government campaign?
- How successful was your campaign?
- What did you learn from the experience?
- What, if anything, would you have done differently?
- What, if any, ethical problems did you encounter and how did you handle them?
All questions should be answered in an essay of 500-1500 words. Applicants may include any attachments they deem relevant, including sample campaign plans, press clips, examples of tactics employed, metrics, and online and offline media. Applications must include one letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member at the applicant's university who can speak knowledgeably about the campaign.
Applicants will be judged on their innovation, work ethic, and overall presentation of their campaign.
Other criteria: Applicants, at time application is submitted, must be recognized by credit standing as a junior or senior enrolled part- or full-time at an accredited college or university. Student government campaign work eligible for consideration must have occurred during the 2008-2009 or 2009-2010 academic years. Applicants must also have a 3.0 GPA minimum and be applying to and able to attend the Graduate School of Political Management within 17 months of the deadline for the fellowship.

2. National Student Advocate of the Year
$10,000 to be awarded for the Graduate School of Political Management to be awarded to a student advocate who has displayed outstanding commitment to a community or on-campus advocacy initiative during his or her collegiate career. The winner will be selected by a group of three judges, based on both the applicant's demonstrated level of engagement and dedication to a cause and answers to the following questions:
- What issue did you advocate?
- What did you do to advocate for the issue?
- How successful were your efforts?
- What did you learn from the experience?
- What, if anything, would you have done differently?
- What, if any, ethical problems did you encounter and how did you handle them?
All questions should be answered in an essay of 500-1500 words. Applicants may include any attachments they deem relevant, including examples of tactics employed, metrics, and online and offline media. Applications must include one letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member at the applicant's university who can speak knowledgeably about the campaign.
